The policy summit was sponsored by UKAS and was timed with the forthcoming Single Equalities Bill in mind. Speakers included Dr Nicola Brewer, Chief Executive of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, Dame Suzi Leather, Chair of the Charities Commission, Robin Dahlberg, a Board Member at the Local Better Regulation Office and Professor Russel Griggs OBE, Chair of the CBI- UK SME Council.
Proposals such as an ‘equality kitemark’ and more flexible standards were proposed during a lively discussion. Panellists also disputed whether the imposition of further regulation might prove a stumbling block to organisations that are trying to implement equality measures. All agreed that one of the biggest barriers to real achievement would be the growth of a rigid ‘tick box’ approach to equality.
Summarising the discussion Lord Lindsay, UKAS Chairman, said: “This has been a very useful and stimulating event and the points raised will be taken forwards for consideration in the debate on these important issues.”
